This month marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s journey toward environmental sustainability. The “Bag the Habit” campaign, spearheaded by GIZ Ghana under the Go Circular project, has officially launched, introducing a new pricing model for plastic bags in participating supermarkets. Customers will now pay 50 pesewas for small plastic bags and 1 Ghana cedi for larger ones. This initiative aims to reduce single-use plastic consumption and encourage the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives.
Supermarkets Leading the Change
Five major supermarkets have committed to this initiative: Sneda Shopping Centre, Neha Supermarket, All Needs Supermarket, Decathlon Ghana, and Green Butterfly Market. By implementing the Voluntary Pact to phase down single-use plastics, these businesses aim to reduce plastic bag usage by 50% by 2030. This collective effort is a response to Ghana’s growing plastic pollution crisis and aligns with the country’s environmental sustainability goals.
Soko Bags: Championing Sustainable Alternatives
At Soko Bags, we’ve been at the forefront of promoting eco-friendly packaging solutions. While many of our bags are made from ethically sourced materials like cotton, we also repurpose rejected clothing from Kantamanto Market, one of the largest secondhand clothing hubs in West Africa, into stylish, durable reusable bags. Through our ongoing work with GIZ and our commitment to circular design, we’re not only reducing textile waste but also creating meaningful livelihoods for local artisans. These bags serve as a powerful reminder that sustainability can be both practical and beautiful.
A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Ghana
The “Bag the Habit” campaign is more than just a pricing strategy; it’s a call to action for consumers and businesses alike to reconsider their environmental impact. By choosing reusable bags, shoppers can contribute to reducing plastic waste and promoting a circular economy. Soko Bags is proud to support this initiative and remains committed to providing sustainable alternatives that benefit both people and the planet.
Join the Movement
As the “Bag the Habit” campaign gains momentum, we encourage everyone to participate actively. Opt for reusable bags, educate others about the importance of reducing plastic waste, and support businesses that prioritize sustainability. Together, we can make a significant impact and pave the way for a cleaner, greener Ghana.
