On Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, the Go Circular Ghana Closing Event marked a significant milestone in Ghana’s fight against plastic pollution. The event brought together stakeholders from government, businesses, and civil society to celebrate achievements, share lessons, and chart the way forward in advancing circular economy practices.
Soko Bags: Transforming Waste into Solutions
Soko Bags was proud to be an active contributor to the Go Circular Ghana program. Our role focused on producing reusable bags made from Kantamanto feedstock — textile waste diverted from landfills — as part of the “Bag the Habit of Single-Use Plastic” campaign. Through this initiative, we showcased how local businesses can turn waste into valuable, sustainable products that replace plastic bags and encourage behavior change.
Beyond production, Soko Bags actively participated in multiple stakeholder workshops, offering our perspective as a circular economy-driven SME. We contributed insights on sustainable manufacturing, waste recovery, and community engagement, reinforcing the critical role of SMEs in Ghana’s transition to circularity.
CEO Yaa Birago’s Voice on the High-Level Panel
Our CEO, Yaa Priscilla Birago, was honored to serve as a panelist during the High-Level Discussion: From Commitment to Action. She spoke passionately about how Soko Bags is using innovation to drive circular economy solutions and fight plastic pollution.
Yaa emphasized several key pillars of our work:
- Innovation: How we transform textile waste, jute from cocoa farmers, and banana fibers into sustainable products.
- Advocacy and Education: The importance of using our platforms not just to sell products but to drive awareness. She highlighted our eco-sorting program for school-age children, which teaches kids about waste segregation, recycling, and the impact of plastic waste.
- Changing Habits: Yaa shared how Soko Bags is fostering a culture shift by providing accessible, reusable alternatives that replace single-use plastics and by engaging communities in sustainable practices.
A Partnership for Impact
Our partnership with GIZ and the Go Circular Ghana program has been instrumental in scaling our impact. Through this collaboration, Soko Bags has not only expanded production but also deepened community engagement and contributed to shaping Ghana’s circular economy roadmap.
The event highlighted the collective progress made in phasing down single-use plastics, showcasing the power of partnerships between government, private sector, and civil society.
Looking Ahead
As the Go Circular Ghana initiative concludes, Soko Bags remains committed to:
- Scaling the use of waste-based materials like textile waste, banana fiber, and jute.
- Continuing our eco-sorting education programs in schools to shape the next generation of environmental stewards.
- Advocating for stronger policies and more sustainable consumer habits.
- Leveraging technology through tools like SokoSmart to build transparency and accountability in sustainable manufacturing.
