At Soko Bags, we are thrilled to be featured by the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) as a shining example of what innovation and perseverance can achieve. The article, written by GCIC’s Executive Director, Ruka Sanusi, highlights our journey as a startup, the challenges we faced, and the transformative impact of joining an incubator like GCIC.
Founded by Yaa Priscilla Birago in 2022, Soko Bags was born out of a desire to tackle the pressing issue of plastic waste in Ghana by creating biodegradable, reusable bags. However, like many startups, we faced significant obstacles from limited resources to lack of market access and technical expertise. This is where GCIC played a pivotal role.
GCIC, with its mission of supporting ventures addressing climate change, provided us with essential resources, mentorship, and technical guidance. As a business incubator, GCIC offered us the opportunity to expand our capabilities and scale in ways we hadn’t thought possible. Through this partnership, we’ve grown from 8 employees to 24, increased production capacity by 500%, and expanded our product line to include eco-friendly t-shirts and aprons.
The article underscores our growing international presence, now spanning seven countries, including Bermuda and Uganda. Our growth is not just in numbers; it’s in impact. By creating jobs, promoting gender equality, and providing a sustainable solution to plastic waste, we are building a future that aligns with our values of environmental sustainability and social empowerment.
As Yaa Birago mentions, “The incubator didn’t just provide us with tools and resources; it fundamentally transformed how we approach our business. It challenged us to think bigger, innovate fearlessly, and stay true to our mission of sustainability.”
GCIC’s spotlight on Soko Bags is a testament to the value of business incubators in shaping startups into success stories with real societal impact. We are deeply grateful for their support and excited for what lies ahead as we continue our journey towards sustainability and innovation.
Thank you to GCIC for the incredible partnership, and to everyone who has supported Soko Bags along the way. We look forward to continuing to provide sustainable, innovative solutions that make a positive impact on our world.
