On November 27, 2024, Soko Bags proudly participated in the Co-Design Workshop and Signing Ceremony of the Voluntary Pact to Phase Out Single-Use Plastics. Organized by Plastic Punch, with support from GIZ Ghana’s Go Circular Project and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, this landmark event took place at Alliance Française d’Accra.
Bringing together major supermarkets, policymakers, environmental organizations, and sustainability advocates, the workshop aimed to co-create actionable solutions to reduce Ghana’s reliance on single-use plastics. The event marked a significant milestone for the country’s transition toward a greener, more sustainable future—and Soko Bags was at the forefront of this movement.
Why This Matters
Plastic waste is a growing environmental crisis, with single-use plastics dominating landfill sites and waterways across Ghana. As a pioneer in sustainable packaging solutions, Soko Bags sees this as both a challenge and an opportunity to drive change. Participating in this workshop represents a monumental step forward in fulfilling our mission to combat plastic waste and provide eco-friendly alternatives to Ghana’s retail sector.
Showcasing Innovation: Soko Bags at the Exhibition
At the heart of the workshop was a vibrant exhibition area where producers of sustainable alternatives displayed their products. Soko Bags took full advantage of this opportunity, presenting our biodegradable and reusable bags made from jute, cotton, and other eco-friendly materials.
Our innovative designs, including the Jute Bag Collection, garnered attention for their durability, practicality, and aesthetic appeal. Visitors to our booth, including supermarket representatives, were intrigued by the story behind Soko Bags—how our products are transforming the way people think about packaging while empowering communities, particularly women, who form 85% of our workforce.
Engaging With Decision-Makers
One of the event’s highlights was the chance to engage directly with supermarket executives looking for viable alternatives to single-use plastics. During our presentation, we emphasized the environmental and economic benefits of transitioning to reusable bags. Soko Bags also shared insights from our journey, including our commitment to removing over 660 million single-use plastic bags from circulation to date.
Networking for Change
The event provided a valuable platform for connecting with key stakeholders, including government officials and environmental organizations. These interactions opened doors for potential partnerships and collaborations, aligning with our vision of making reusable bags accessible across Ghana and beyond.
A Win for the Planet and the People
Soko Bags’ participation in this groundbreaking workshop reinforces our leadership in Ghana’s fight against plastic waste. By aligning with major supermarkets and policymakers, we’re accelerating the shift toward a plastic-free future. This isn’t just a win for the environment; it’s a triumph for communities, businesses, and future generations.
As the signing of the Voluntary Pact draws Ghana closer to a sustainable retail landscape, we’re proud to contribute to this transformative initiative. Together with like-minded organizations, we’re proving that innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability can create meaningful change.
Stay tuned as we continue to champion eco-friendly solutions and advocate for a greener Ghana. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible—for our planet and our people.
